Thelma "Nan" Mae Stahl

Thelma Mae “Nan” Stahl, 102, passed away at the home of her daughter, Jeri, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 9:12 AM. Nan was born April 13, 1919, in Owensboro, KY, the daughter of the late John Ivo Fenwick and Vivian Rae Arnold Fenwick.
Nan will be remembered as a tiny, spunky woman who both loved and was loved by her family and her animals. Nan had many titles over the years: bookkeeper (Moore’s Store); secretary (Zanesville City Schools); animal lover; trophy-winning golfer; cross-stitcher; ceramics master; ballgame fanatic (which intensified during her 45 year marriage to Coach Stahl); husband’s and grandkids’ #1 cheerleader; vacation lover; and a reliable, hardworking mother and grandmother who was always eager to help decorate and paint. Nan lived through many historic events, including the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression (which coincidentally prompted her lifelong dislike of potatoes and “those dern beans”), WWI, and WWII. Nan often recalled times of her youth spent yodeling and singing at gatherings, jumping off the roof in her free time with her brother Jerry, as well as adventures to the outhouse (always a group excursion if one had to go). If there was an open day, once cars came on the scene, a long drive was the perfect way to spend family time. If she was ever having a challenging day, Jeri would just say, “Mom, do you want to take the girls (their dogs) for a ride?” and Nan would perk right up. And when Nan got out of line, they would call Mike, her first grandson, to “reel her in.” 
Nan was a long-time member of the First Christian Church, and, for the past four years, took great joy in reading and giggling with her best friend, great-great grandson Tucker Hoerst. 
She is survived by daughters Joyce (Dennie) Haddox, Jeri (the late John) Power, Pat (Don) Smart, and Lynne (Larry) Hollingshead; and by brother Jerry (Carol) Fenwick. Nan will also be lovingly remembered by grandchildren Mike (Kerry) Haddox, Mindy (Greg) Waite, Michelle (Lowell) Body, Marty (Thalia) Haddox, Marcie (John) Fondale, Pam (Rick) McFerren, Tam (Kent) Ramsey, Shawn (April) Power, Amy Thornton, David (Cary) Smart, Susan (Jay) Hardy, Todd (Stacie) Smart, Wendy (Troy) Franklin, Susan (Matt) Heckaman, Dan (Alex) Hollingshead, and Dave (Kim) Hollingshead. She is also survived by 35 great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by loving husband Don Stahl; brothers Allen, Charles, and Roy Fenwick; sister Lucille Steinmetz; infant son Ralph Edward Hopkins; son Gary Stahl;  grandson Eli Stahl; and beloved dog JoJo.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, February 25, at Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home, and from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at First Christian Church on Saturday, February 26, prior to 11:00 AM services with Rev. Dawn Remster officiating. Burial will conclude at the Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
