Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Sussman of Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida, formerly of Columbus, Ohio and Zanesville, Ohio passed away peacefully in the arms of her friend Nala on December 2nd at her home in Florida.
Beth was born on June 12, 1941 in Zanesville, Ohio to William and Harriet (Dodd) Norman. A member of the National Honor Society, she graduated from Zanesville High School in 1959 where she had been the treasurer for the Friendship Club, and a member the Scholarship Team and of the Daughters of Zanesville. She studied chemistry and medicine and graduated from Salem College in North Carolina in 1963.
After college, Beth worked at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, and for Quest Diagnostics for nearly 20 years. She co-founded The Stripping Workshop, a furniture restoration business. She taught horseback riding and archery at summer camps and she served as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She was part of the group that helped to start the Clintonville Academy (Columbus) and she was active in the Christian Fellowship Church during its founding years.
Beth was a highly intelligent woman of many talents. She played the piano, enjoyed camping, canoeing, and horseback riding, and she completed the crossword puzzle in the newspaper every day. She created stained glass windows, gingerbread houses, and elaborate Halloween costumes and birthday cakes. She was adept at home projects, including laying a brick wall and patio, installing a hanging ceiling, replacing windows, remodeling kitchens and baths, and landscaping the yard. She was a talented cook, grill master, baker, gardener, seamstress, and conversationalist. A beloved mother and Grammie, Beth loved hosting parties and family gatherings, she loved the beach and the mountains, and there wasn’t an ice cream shop she couldn’t pass up. With an ever-present sense of humor, she loved a good prank or joke or silly song, and forevermore she is laughing and singing in Heaven.
