Edward “Ed” Joseph Burns, 90, of Zanesville, Ohio passed at 6:10 P.M. Wednesday, February 21, 2024 after a long illness.
He was born on Sunday, January 14, 1934 in Steubenville, Ohio the son of the late John David Burns and Ruth Lodge Burns.
Prior to his retirement and moving to Florida, Ed was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church, serving numerous roles including Deacon, Elder and Trustee. Upon his return to Ohio later in life, he belonged to Coburn United Methodist Church. Ed retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1992 after 36 years of service. He was a graduate of Steubenville Big Red High School and studied a year at Miami of Ohio before returning home to marry Carol…the love of his life! He was a huge sports fan and loved Big Red football, everything ZHS including the Devilettes, The Ohio State University and Pittsburgh Steelers. Ed was a member of Shriners International, Canton Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Zanesville Tip-off Club and active church volunteer up for any assignment. Anyone that knew Ed found out quickly his love for family, his passion for sports and thorough enjoyment of a cold beer.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Sanders Burns; a daughter, Diane E. Young (Gary Dragoon); a son, John D. Burns (Jane); five grandchildren, Jessica Burey (Jed), Jonathan Young, Alyssa Bouterse (Jordan), Hannah Burns (Jake Wolfe) and JJ Burns (Leikyn DalPonte); eight great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, W. Robert Morrison and Pete Ruggieri; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Ruggieri; and his sister-in-law, Kathleen Morrison.
Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home where funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. with Bill Cronk officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 11:30 A.M. at Union Cemetery, 1720 Sunset Boulevard Steubenville, Ohio 43952.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Ed’s name to Genesis Hospice, 713 Forest Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
