Harley "Sonny" E. Smith Jr. , 68 of Zanesville died 7:27 PM Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Genesis Morrison House Hospice surrounded by his loving family following a 13 month long illness with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM).
He was born on Friday, September 2, 1949 in Zanesville, the son of the late Harley E. Smith Sr. and Mary K. (Hindel) Smith of Frazeysburg.
Sonny was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He graduated in 1969 from Tri Valley High School and after that started to work for Rittberger Brothers over 15 years. Then he worked as a Manager for three local Foodtown Grocery stores. He later was employed with and retired from Consolidated Freightway. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, playing cards, bowling, softball, camping, all his pets, dancing and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Sonny was a member of the Malta Masonic Lodge #118 where he was a 40 year member, a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He is survived in addition to his mother by his wife, Martha "Marty" L. (Harper) Smith whom he married Dec. 6, 1969; 3 daughters, Kathy (Terry) Kelly of Zanesville, Tracie (Don) Moyer of Duncan Falls and Tammy (Nick) Fifield of Zanesville; 8 grandchildren, Kyle (Kelley) Moyer, Chelsea (John Mako) Kelly, Lindsay (Derek) Penley, Tory Kelly, Morgan Fifield, Heath Moyer, Tasia (Drae Pettiford) Fifield, Kaelyn Fifield; a great grandson, Ayden Moyer; his siblings, Mary Ann Burr, Joseph Smith, Rose Hynus, Loretta Smith, Steven Smith, Gary Smith and Richard Smith; numerous nieces & nephews. Sonny was preceded in death in addition to his father by 2 brothers, Dorsey Smith and Donald Smith; a sister, Donna Jean Smith; his mother & father-in-law, William & Helen Harper; two brothers-in-law, Raymond L. Harper & Jerry Harper.
Friends may call 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with Masonic Services at 3:45 PM on Monday, September 18th at the Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home where funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 19th with Chaplain Tim Patton officiating. Burial with Military Honors will conclude at the St. Paul Cemetery, Sonora Ohio.
